What to Know About Pyrolytic Self-Cleaning Ovens

Ovens with a self-cleaning function use pyrolytic technology to incinerate spills and debris into ash.

What Is a Self-Cleaning Oven?

The same way a dishwasher removes an undesirable chore from to-do lists, the self-cleaning oven provides a convenient time-saver that deep cleans your oven for you. A pyrolytic self-cleaning oven uses a cycle that reaches extremely high temperatures to disintegrate debris inside the oven and burn it into ash. This ash can then be easily swept up after the self-cleaning cycle ends, saving you time and back-breaking energy.

Self-cleaning cycles typically run from 2 to 4 hours and can reach temperatures as high as 1000° Fahrenheit. An automatic door latch system will prevent the oven door from being opened once the cycle has begun and will keep it locked until the oven has cooled down to a safe temperature.

How to Use the Self-Cleaning Feature Safely?

As with all appliances, it’s important to thoroughly read and understand the owner’s manual to ensure the best results and become aware of any safety warnings. Certain items should never be left inside or used on the oven, especially during a self-cleaning cycle. Remove all accessories including racks unless otherwise specified as self-cleaning safe, and do not use foreign oven cleaners during the self-cleaning cycle.

With the process of over-heating baked-on and charred foods comes the risk of carbon monoxide production. Clean up these types of spills by hand as much as you can to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide emissions. These fumes are extremely toxic for birds as well as small animals, so make sure to relocate pets to somewhere safe and properly ventilate your home by opening windows and turning on your ventilation hood.

Proper ventilation is the key to remaining safe from fume emissions so choose to run the self-cleaning cycle during a beautiful day, send children and pets outside for a few hours to play, open the windows to allow your house to naturally air out and let the sunshine and fresh air in.
